Bill Jordan 1986
When Bill Jordan sat down on his parents porch back in 1986 and started sketching his first camouflage pattern, he probably had no idea that this first innovation would evolve into one of the worlds most respected and recognised outdoor brands, dominating the sporting camouflage market and becoming a household name.
The idea was a simple one – to create an attractive feature for his Spartan Archery hunting clothing and equipment that would distinguish his products from his competitors and help hunters achieve greater success in the field. Strangely enough, this same basic principle still holds true today. But it’s now about so much more than hunting.
Of course, not everyone subscribes to the camo lifestyle, but it is a widely accepted concept that camo significantly improves your success in the field by allowing you to blend seamlessly into your environment. You are able to get closer to your quarry than ever before and create much less disturbance to the surrounding fauna. This in turn helps to improve your chances of success for the next time you go hunting. It also means you can make more mistakes as you stalk into your quarry as your movement is much less noticeable. Of course, we’d all prefer not to make mistakes, but we’re only human after all.
There is something almost spiritual about “becoming one” with the nature that surrounds you. Effective camouflage allows you to see and experience more of the natural world than ever before. Your chances of harvesting the right animal are vastly improved as you will undoubtedly see more animals from which to choose. From songbirds flying in to sit on the end of your barrel to inquisitive squirrels running across your lap in a high seat, we have all marveled at the wonders of camo and Realtree patterns represent the very pinnacle of modern camouflage design.
By combining space-aged design technology with a lifetime of accumulated hunting knowledge, Bill Jordon continues to build on his legacy of creating the world’s most effective camouflage patterns. But when it comes time to develop the next generation of patterns, Realtree is also able to draw on the knowledge and experience of the worlds leading team of hunting Pro Staff. These are hunters who are considered to be the very best in their respective fields and all of whom subscribe to Realtree’s brand values.
It’s a family thing
“Family, friends and the outdoors” is a brand message that really does encapsulate what Realtree is all about. It’s not only about enjoying a successful hunt, although that is still pretty important, but also sharing the experience with those around you. It’s also about identifying with your fellow outdoorsmen and women by proudly wearing Realtree even when you’re not hunting. This idea has created an international community of outdoor enthusiasts – a global family if you will.
Whilst Realtree’s core business is still very much centered around hunting effectiveness, licensing the worlds leading hunting brands to add Realtree patterns to their products, the fishing, outdoor lifestyle and fashion markets have shown the greatest level of growth in recent years – and the variety of products available in Realtree patterns has exploded. Whether you’re hunting chamois in the Austrian Alps or popping to the shops to grab some milk, there is choice of Realtree products and apparel suited to the task at hand.
Globally recognised brands including Deerhunter, WileyX Sunglasses, Le Chameau, Vorn Equipment, Pinewood and Seedland have all chosen to partner with Realtree, launching their own range of lifestyle and fashion products to take advantage of the huge increase in outdoor enthusiasts wanting to clearly demonstrate their affinity for an outdoor way of life.
Today, Bill Jordan’s Realtree® camouflage can be found on thousands of products everywhere you look. Really, take a look around. Sure, you see it being worn by hunters heading to the field, but you also see it on the high street, at the market, in the gym, in the grandstands. There has never been such a diverse community of Realtree aficionados and they are growing every day.
It’s a Camo Casual world and Realtree is setting the trends…
From 1986, very early in the “Camouflage Revolution”, to the present day, many things have changed in the camo world. Transformations in style have been seen in the field and, with the passage of time, the textiles used in outdoor and hunting clothing have both reflected the trends of each era and the increasing comfort and performance demands of the outdoors person.
Realtree pride themselves on being at the forefront of technologically advanced effectiveness camouflage patterns. It’s what they do. However, they are also the maters of innovation when it comes to finding new ways to apply their patterns to a wide variety of substrates – fabrics, plastics, metals and just about any other material imaginable.
Hunters now demand the very best in technically advanced fabrics, whilst style conscious “Fashionistas” don’t want to wear heavy winter garments designed for sub-zero temperatures. Technological advancements that were once the preserve of elite athletes, are now demanded by even the casual, recreational hunter. There is no longer a clear distinction between “fashion” and “function”. Todays camo consumers expect their products to look as good as they perform and as the market demands greater variety, Realtree has responded by exploring bold new ways to cover the world in camo.
Thirty+ years on, through more than 19,000 product lines and 2,000 successful partnerships, Realtree clearly have the same hunger and determination they started with. Realtree’s charismatic founder Bill Jordan is still very much at the helm, driving the company forward with his infectious passion and boundless enthusiasm. He understands outdoorsmen and women in a way that few ever will. And with his son Tyler being groomed in the wings, the next generation of Realtree is about to emerge. There is no stopping. There is no resting. There is no finish line. For Realtree®, there is only forward.
